BONE DENSITY SCANNING IN MALLORCA
Bone density scanning is a diagnostic technique used by the specialists at the Hospital Llevant in Porto Cristo to measure the density of patients’ bones to see how strong they are. Our radiologists calculate the amount of calcium in certain areas of the bone. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry test is the most commonly used test.
WHAT IS BONE DENSITY SCANNING USED FOR?
Bone density scanning is a technique similar to an x-ray which allows us to measure bone density quickly and accurately. This technique is mainly used by specialists to detect bone loss or osteoporosis, diseases which mean the calcium and density of the bones are very low, increasing the risk of fractures.
In addition to bone density scanning tests, our doctors also recommend other tests, such as blood analysis in order to assess if there is any kind of kidney disease. The functionality of the parathyroid gland is also analysed, along with the levels in the body of those minerals related to bone resistance, such as calcium.
With this test:
We can confirm an osteoporosis diagnosis if there has been a previous bone fracture.
We preempt any possible future bone fractures.
We can determine the bone loss rate.
